Shipping and Rail Systems
Steel River is situated on the doorstep of the world class Port of Newcastle (just 5 minutes from Steel River) - one of Australia’s biggest bulk export ports. It handles in excess of 3,000 shipping movements and trade throughput 2006 - 2007 was over 85 million tonnes. Construction of a third coal terminal for the Port is expected to increase GDP by $1.5 billion per year, boost exports by more than $1 billion and generate up to 5,000 jobs across New South Wales. A sophisticated rail system links the port with Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the surrounding Hunter Valley, the centre of Australia’s vast coal mining activities.
Highways and Airports
The Pacific Highway is immediately adjacent to the Steel River site and links Newcastle with Sydney (just 2 hours drive to the south), Brisbane and Melbourne. Newcastle Airport, Williamtown, just 15 minutes away provides direct flights to the capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and all the key regional centres along New South Wales' North Coast with total passenger throughput of over 950,000 for the year to 30 June 2007.
Workforce Skills
Newcastle is a post-industrial city of 145,000 people serving a surrounding catchment of 604,000 people in the Hunter Region. The workforce has a high proportion of administrative, management and professional occupations, which is indicative of the strength of knowledge economy. Clerical, sales and services positions have grown in response to growing consumer demand in Newcastle.
Education and Training
Newcastle is home to the Hunter Institute (TAFE), the largest provider of nationally recognized vocational education and training services in the Hunter Region, as well as, leading edge education and research facilities at the University of Newcastle and the John Hunter Teaching Hospital.
