In the Arts
Domaine in conjunction with Newcastle City Council initiated the Steel River Steel Sculpture Competition. Participating students produced a small replica of their design, which was judged by a panel including representatives from Domaine, Council and the local arts community.
The winner of the Steel River Sculpture Competition, Natalie Dudding won $5,000 first prize for her "Riverain" sculpture and may have the opportunity for her design to be fabricated and installed as the entrance marker for the Steel River Industrial Estate. The second prize of $2,500 went to Kira Jovanovski for "Steel River Portal" and the Director’s choice third prize of $1,000 to Malcolm Van Drempt for "Synergy".
Competition judges, Lord Mayor Cr John Tate, former Managing Director of Domaine Property Funds Bruce Baudinet and local artist John Turier deliberated as they picked first and second prize designs from a field of 17 entrants. Third prize was awarded by Newcastle Regional Art Director Nick Mitzevich.
Bruce Baudinet said the standard was high and very impressive. The majority of students worked well to the brief with strong concepts and incorporating connections to the site.
“Newcastle is becoming the city of sculpture and there are a lot of great pieces in the region. We are excited about having the opportunity to install one at our Steel River Estate.”
